SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The monthly meeting of the St Albans School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Present — Messrs H. A'Coart (chairman), (Jhaplin, McCleave, Palmer, Capper and Gibson (hon. sec). An apology was received for the absence of Mr Gordon. The Treasurer's statement showed that the prize fund in hand amounted to £29 9a sd, and the incidental fund £8 7s sd. An application, was received from the Orescent road Weslejau Sunday-school for permission to hold a picnic in the school grounds on the 16th December. Granted. A letter was read from Mr Briggs relative to the decision of the Committee touching the puuishment of his child. Received. A letter was received from the Education Board with reference to teachers making use of test cards before examinations, and stating that any teacher making use of , information so obtained would be subject to dismissal, (The quarterly return ot the attendance at the North Canterbury schools was received. The Visiting Committee .reported that some expense had been incurred in altering a badly constructed drain, and it was resolved to forward account' ior- same to Education Board requesting payment of cost. The head master's report shewed that the number of scholars on the roll was 565, and the average attendance 466. It was deoided to close the schools on Anniversary Day and that five weeks holidays should be given dating from 23rd December. The distribution of prizes was fixed for the 23rd December, as follows :—■ j Side school at 2 p.m., main school at 5 p.m. The, absentee list was read, but action deferred till after the holidays. _ It was reported chat the number oil the side school roll was 101, and the average attendance 88. It was decided to request Mesdames Williams and Capper to undertake the examination of sewing at the side school. Messrs Chaplin, McCieave and Palmer were appointed a Visiting Committee. Mr McCleave stated that he had obtained permission from Mr W. Garrard, the patentee, to erect his swimming apparatus for learners at the baths, and the former gentleman offered to erect the same free of cost. Votes of thanks were accorded to both gentlemen. Other routine business was disposed of, and the meeting terminated. The East Oxford Committee held their ordinary meeting on Monday. PresentMessrs Ingram (Chairman), Waterman, Baxter and Aldridge. It was resolved to send notices to the parents of those children who attend irregularly, that if they were not sent to school the Committee were determined to prosecute them. It was decided that some reward be given in April to those scholars who deserve it. It was decided to close the school on December 16th for-the Christmas holidays, and re-open oa 16€h January. The Master's report showed the average attendance to be far from satisfactory, the average only reaching 176 out of a possible 209. A list of irregular attenders was sent in.
