CANTERBURY COLLEGE v SYDENHAM.
In their match on the Old Show Grounds against the Sydenham Club, Canterbury College put up something like a record. They won by 35 points to 9 points, and the score just about represented the difference between the teams. The result is accounted for by the fact that the College were well represented and Sydenham not. Out of the fifteen players for the latter five were from the first and theremainder from the second and third fifteens. _ That they lacked combination was apparent from the start and also that they were no '-match for their more experienced opponents was equally evident. The 'scores they did make were highly creditable in the face of such strong opposition. ; The match was one-sided and needs little description. Ivens, Cresswell, and Braddock headed the first attack, which was stemmed .by Atkinson, and he, with . Beece and Young, assisted afterwards by Jthe dribbling of Duncan and Pender, took .place with the College quarters. Here Cresswell received a pass and ran past ' teteryone, secured a try'and placed the goal. About the centre Pender broke away with a dribble aud scored. West in attempting to relieve with a flying Kick missed the ball. Forrester failed at thegoal. Following this Ward passed . from the scrum to Cresswell, he to Collins who scored as he was collared. The : Sydenham full-back was then altered '< without any very satisfactory Tesult, as a >few minutes later 1 he was passed by rCresswell, who secured the ball from Collins, and obtained a try, from which he placed a goal. A good loose dribbling irush by the College forwards next ended lib Dawson touching down, but Ivens! ifailed at the place. By a good stroke of play Seese got his side out of a nasty 'jidifticuity, and following up their advan- i Jtage made an attack which West badly i-topped, and from the scrum which j followed, McCormick dribbled the ball lover. Reese tried the place, but did not [improve. The College forwards started a jdribbling rush, on the kick off, to the leentre, from whence the passing between * Cresswell, Craddock and Ward allowed t-the latter to secure a try, which was not £. Merriman and Ford twice the College from scoring in tbe mrafe few minutes of the second spell, f_Hit' the back play of the Maroons 'was too good, and Ward obtained try, :from which a goal .was Registered. Comparatively even play . -rfoßowed for somectime, in which Reese and Pender did the lion's share of the fcrork for Sydenham. Forrester collared *yell, and Waddell made a good dribble, from the return of which Atkinson got a daark, and a force down against the Colleee moulted to the extreme pleasnre of the spectators, whose sympathies were with 'who Overmatched team. After Speight Bad sot over and Ivens bad increased the sry Beese intercepted a pass to Cresswell, fend, smartly sending the ball to Forrester, Ahe latter obtained a well deserved try. weese took the kick, but was unfortunate Jn the ball striking tbe post and bounding ran the wrong direction. This seemed to 'loeSydenham's expiring efiort, for straight fway the College scored again an a result 'Of good passing. Hiorns and Ward got a *ry each, and Ward and Ivens one between j-hem, and from one of them Cresswell placed a goal, which made the score 33 ♦ points (five goals and five tries) to 9 points <one goal and two triss). Mr Geo. Harris ecteaas referee.
