London, June 9.
In a letter to the Times Sir J. J?. Garrick denies that Queensland controls the deportation of natives from New Guinea. He suggests that the powers of High Commissioner of the Pacific should be vested in Sir J. Ferguson, who was formerly UnderSecretary of State for the colonies. So far as the Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides are concerned the Queensland steamer Merrie England is making frequent visits to watch the way in which recruiting is carried on.

The Berliner Tageblatt asserts that the resumption of the Kanaka traffic places the British in the light of slave hunters.
Perth (W.A.), June 12.
The Western Australian Government have withdrawn from the proposed conference on the introduction of Coolie labour into Australia, as they hold the same views as Sir Samuel Griffiths, Premier of Queensland, that no useful purpose was to be served by its being established.
