DARING BURGLARY.
SYDNEY, May 2?.
A daring robbery has been perpetrated on the premises of the Colonial Sugar Company, in O'Connell street. ' The premises were closed at about ten o'clock on.Friday night, and all was the%secure, but when the employees came to work on Saturday morning they found that nearly di the windows were broken, and that the heavy iron door of the strong room bad been burst open. An examination showed . tl.ul the bargUrahad acted with the greatest ■tk-iiberation and the most remarkable daring The handle of the door had first Lcf n knocked off and holes had been bored through oue of the iron plates forming the tk-or, which consists of two heavy aheets of Iron rivetted together in such a way that
thete is a space of about 2in be tvwi them. This space the burglars iU'.'-i with blasting powder, and having au&fchetl a lengthy fuse to it, they must have lighted the end of it and retired to ■avvuit.the result. A terrific explosion was heard, but the people whose attention was atfs\eted to it thought that it was some accident to the machinery of the Sydney Meriting Herald, whose office is a few doors lower down the street.
There seemed, however, to be no unusual commotion about the newspaper office, and the matter was passed over without further notice. The force of the explosion shattered the glass of most of the windows iu= the rear of the building, forced one of the ordinary doors off its hinges, tore the massive, iron and steel door of the strong room from its position, and splintered it to pieces. The noise must have alarmed the burglars, for all they took from the safe was 14s in silver, while in their haste to make good their escape they left behind them a number of the tools they bad used in tile work. There was about £5 worth of stamps in the safe, but these were left untouched. The detectives declare that the burglary was the work of some Victorian criminals who have recently come to this colony.
