MR WORTHINGTON AND "PERSONALITY."
■ TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRE3S, . '■.
Sir, —Having already trespassed so much on your valuable space, ,I : hesitate to make any comments on Mr Worthington'a senupn published in'tills morning's PRESS, the more so that I have no doubt Mr Watson is well able to defend himself. But the sermon in question contains each a glaring inconsistency that I cannot resist the temptation of pointing it out. Mr Worthington makes great fun of Mr Watson's definition of " personality," and towards the close of his address quotes with approval a statement of Dr. Momerie'a, setting forth in plainest language that very theory of personality which Mr Watson holds and Mr Worthington bitterly attacks. Dr. Momerie'e statement is- that " the English -word, used as if it were the same thing (as the latin} means a separate' individuality, a direct contradiction to the well-known classical meaning," which Mr Worlhington upholds. Dr. Aiomerie has even written a very able work on -" Personality," and this is his conclusion of the whole matter, " The denial of Personality is the denial of knowledge " (p. 132). Probably Mr Worthington lias not read this work, otherwise he could hardly have quoted its author with approval.—-Yours, &c, Philalethes.
