ASHBURTON MARKETS.

Mb D. Thomas reports upon the Live Stock Market in the Aahburton district for the week ending October 2nd as follows, namely: —On Tuesday, at the Tinwald yards the usual weekly sale of live stock was held. There was only a small catalogue presented, made up principally of half fat merino wethers and small crossbred hoggets, very few really food sheep for holdiug on being on offer, he attendance of farmers, dealers, and others was about an average, and it may safely be reported that the biddings, although slow, were continued longer than of late, resulting in my case in a total clearance at values in advance of those of the last few weeks. The totals yarded for the day were made up of 1954 sheep and 21 head of cattle, of which my entry consisted of 1604 sheep and 19 head of cattle. My principal sales were as follows, viz.:—One sheep at 265, 13 merino wethers 10s 6d, 87 merino wethers 9s 6d, 156 fat merino wethers 11s lid, 86 fat crossbred two-tooths 14s lid, 65 cull hoggets 6s 9d, 200 crossbred hoggets Us 7d, 257 crossbred hogteets 9s Id, 340 merino ewes to lamb 8s 9d, 111 merino ewes with lambs at foot Us 6d, &c In cattle the demand for beef was still good, but for anything else no rise in value can be quoted. Isold lat£6 3s 6d, 1 at £517e 6d, 2 at £5, 2 at £5 2s 6d, 2 springers at £2 7s 6d each, 8 calves nearly yearlings at 14s each. Nothing has been doing daring the week in private sales of stock. On Friday I held my usual fortnightly sale of sheepskins, submitting a good catalogue. Owing to adverse reports from England the buyers are more guarded in their biddings, and a farther drop in values has to be reported. My catalogue comprised 1003 sheepskins, 11 hides, and 4 bags of fat, and my sales were aa fol'lowb :—2 very heavy skins brought 7a 6d each, best butchers crossbred skins made 5s 3d to 5s lid, the latter very heavy; second quality, 3s 9d, 4s 0d to 5a Id each; medium and inferior, 2a to 3s 6d each; butchers' best merinos made 4s to 4s lid; second quality, 2s 6d. 3s 6d to 3s lid each ; country dry skins brought for best 5s to 6s; second quality, 3s 6d to 4s 9d; inferior and small.
