Owing to the carpenters' strike, iron, concrete and asphalt are apparently replacing wood in the construction of buildings to the extent of at least 40 per cent. Ten thousand miners and railway men hate struck at Pittsburg for advances in wages. The Riverside Unions are federating to assist the dockers. The Trade* Council has given orders to " boycott" j Tassel* carrying federation men. The carmen strike on Monday to assist, and a general riverside strike is impending. The income of the Sailors' and Firemen's Union is £74,000. Mjrlboubne, October 3. ' Mr Justice Jeune has refused to continue the injunction preventing the Carpenters' Union from issuing placards urging the trade to leave the works of Messrs Peto Bros., builders, of PimlSsqsmd Wilton road, S.W. Unionist carmen, intend to block the Carron and Hermitage wharjres oa Monday. It is reported that the federation of thirty-eight Unions, embracing four hundred and fifty thousand members, has been com* pleted, and is likely to force the masters to » universal lock-out so far as the riverside is concerned* The Carron strike is very acute, but the Shipping Federation is determined to make a stand against the strikers, Kaiapox Football Clttb.—On Tuesday evening there was a good attendance at the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, to witness the presentation of the Junior flag ■&» trophies. Mr T. Miller, one of the VicePresidents, occupied the chair. Songs were given by Mies A. Johnston, Mrs W. E. May. Messrs MoGribbon, T. S. Cavarhill, and Wiremu Urn, and a pianoforte selection by Miss Vincent. Mr &. J. Alexander, in making the presentations, referred at length to the good qualities of football as a Igame, and to the local Club. Up to this year taeir Club had managed to play a few spasmodic matches, but Mr T. S. Caverhill had encouraged and fostered the talent among them, with what result they all knew. Daring the season the first fifteen had played ten matches and only loetone. Hβ hoped next year they would enter for. the Senior Championship and the Becond Fifteen go for the Junior Flag. He thjen presented the seven pendants givea for the tournament by the Amateur Athletic Club. On behalf of Mr Levy, tobacconist, he gave W. TJro a pipe, and handed toe j Junior Flag over to Mr Caveriull, who replied in » suitable speech.
