AMERICAN SUMMARY.
SAN FRANCISCO, August 21. A battle monument in commemoration of the early struggles of the American colonists with Great Britain was unveiled with great pomp and ceremony and the usual spreadeagle oratory at Bennington, Vermont, on August 19bh.
Carl Soora, a mining expert, hailing from Australia, succumbed at the Cliff House, near the Heads, San Francisco, by drowning, on July 24th. Now there are two widows in the city lamenting his decease. It is thought he drowned himself to avoid prosecution for bigamy. President W. G. yon Home, of the Canadian Pacific R.R., has renounced his citizenship as an American, and is about to become a British subject. Yon Home is moved to do this because, by the Canadian law, an alien cannot hold the position of President of the Canadian Pacific Railroad and Steamship liners. The White Star liner steamer Majestic arrived at New York, on August sth, in 5 days 18 hours and 3 nuns from Queenstown, beating all - previous record by 57 mins. Among her passengers was Dr. Emmett, President of the Irish National Federation for America, who had been studying the Irish question in London. He returned hopeful that Ireland would soon gain legislative independence. The crops throughout that island were never better. Wells Bros, take a large and well* equipped circus and menagerie down frem San Francisco to the colonies by the Monowai next month. ■ ?: " : " ■ Roman Catholic nuns and Sisters of Charity have been certificated to teach in the public schools of Texas, the AttorneyGeneral of the State holding there is nothing in the Constitution to prevent them. Leprosy has been developed in New Orleans. The subject is a white woman named Mary Bolt, who died there on August 16th. . There are half a dozen other cases. ■ It is reported in the city that a couple married at Denver, CaL, on August 16th, took a balloon ascension for the bridal trip under the direction of Professor King, and reached an altitude of 8000 ft. Then the balloon collapsed and shot earthward like a plummet for nearly a mile, when the folda of the silkj"suddenly expanded and the remainder of the descent was comparatively gentle. The balloon alighted in a corn field near the town. Its tenants were unconscious, and remained in that condition several hours. Cholera made its appearance in Ohio on August 12th. Henry Hilton and his daughter were stri&en down when at Springfield. The physicians pronounce the disease to be of the true Asiatic type. Frank Melbourne, the so-called Australian " Rain King "■- is an exploded phenomenon. Twice before have his efforts been unsuccessful, and on August 10th at Canton, Ohio, his third failure has shaken the faith of the people in him below par. Instead of raining the heat from an unclouded eun became almost unbearable. "He may be able to produce rain in Australia," writes a sneering reporter, V but hie machine is of no avail in Ohio."
