THE WEATHER.
Upon the plains in the Ashley County there has never been such a scarcity o* water as there is at present. .Many persons have to cart the water for stock and house purposes for considerable distances. The wells which a few weeks, ago. gave signs of improving haVe again begun to fail. Probably the.firs, nor'-wester which will send the melting snow into the rivers may mend matters. Although rain has frequently threatened, the clouds do not release their contents on the newly-sown crops, whose growth is being retarded iv consequence. Our Malvern correspondent writes:—A splendid heavy mild rain fell all over this district on Friday night for about six hours. It was badly required, and more still Is wanted to increase water supplies. About four hours' rain fell at Kirwee and other parts of the Courtenay and Malvern districts on Friday night. The gauge registered four-tenths of an inch at Kirwee.
The weather In Ashburton on Friday was like midsummer, but there was a change towards night, when rain came down pretty steadily for several hours. It was fine again on Saturday, with indications of frost towards evening.
