ASHBURTON MARKETS.
Mb D. Thomas reports upon the Live Stock Market in the Ashburton district for tbe week ending August 7th, as follows, namely:—Ou Tuesday, at the Tinwald Yards, the usual weekly sale of live stock was held. The catalogue presented for the day's business was the smallest we have had for the last six months. The attendance of farmers and others interested was about an average one, and iv sheep all lots were eagerly competed for up to values of late sales. Th _ total yarded for the day consisted of 13S. sheep, 45 head of cattle, of which mv entry was made up of 577 sheep and 27 head of cattle, which were sold at prices as under, viz.:—6o merino wethers lis 4d, 24 merino wethers 8s 3d, 15 merino ewes 5s lOd, 12 crossbred lambs 8s sd, 108 crossbred ewes in lamb 9a 7d, 221 merino ewes in lamb 6s fid, 138 crossbred ewes in lamb 14s 3d. In cattle, the demand was, if anything, a little brisker, prices hardening in consequence, but to make them remunerative stock to hold they will have to rise a great deal higher yet. My principal sales were—2 fat cows £4 3s each, 3 fat heifers __5 7s each, 2 do £4 each, springeis at £2 13s, £3 15s and £5 5s each, 8 eighteenmonths old cattle 55s each, and 6 calves 14s each.
Next Tuesday, at Ashburton Yards.ll shall offer several superior lines of sheep, including freezers, both crossbred aud merino, crossbred hoggets, and crossbred ewes in lamb.
Sheepskins, Fat, Hides, and Tallow report :—On Friday I held my u.ual fortnightly sale of sheepskins, fat, hides aud tallow, and was favored with the largest catalogue ever offered in Ashburton. There was a good attendance of fellmongers, biddings were spirited, and my catalogue was cleared at a rise of from fid to 9d per skin, jay catalogue consisted of 1494 sheepskins, 4 bags wool, 6 bags fat, 3 tins tallow, and 34 hides, all of which were cleared at prices as under:—Butchers* * best crossbred skins made 5s fid, 5s 9d, 5s lid, to 6s Id: second quality, 4s, 4a 4d, 4s Bd, 5s to 5s 4d each ; medium and inferior, {2s 9d, 3s, 3s 4d, 3s 8d to 3s lid each; best merino skins, 5. 3d, 5s __, 5s 9d to 6s Id each; second quality, 3. 9d, 4s, 4s 4d, 4s Bd, 49 lid to os Id each ; medium to inferior, 2. 6d, 3s, 3s 6d to 3_ 8d each: farmer.' dry skins made for best 4. 9d to 6s; second quality, 3s. 4s to 4. 6d; inferior, is od, 2s 6d to 2s lid; dry skins s_d per Ib. Wool, 4d, SJd, to7d perlb.* Rough fat, ljd; tallow, lid per lb. Hides, under _01bs, lid per lb; over 501 baudbaud under 60ib. 2d ; over 601b, 3d. Calfskins 3d. Cut, damaged, and bulls'! hides, Id perlb.
