In the evening Mr Hubohiioa moved the second reading of the Lioene* ing Act Amendment Bill, which wm lost by 31 to 28. Mr W. Hutchesoniinorei the eeoond reading of the University of Otago Council Electoral Bill to confflt upon graduates a share in its admialetr* , tion by a gradual system of representfttioa on the Council of the University. The motion was agreed to. Mr W. Hutohieott moved the second roadingof theMuaioipw Fire Insurance Bill to pormlt City «>« Borough Couucih to insure building! against fire within their reipeofciW boundaries. The measure came in for general condemnation and the motion wM lo3t by 32 to 15. The second reading <W the Book Purchasers' Protection. Sir Oeo« &** moved the second reading of the Friendly Societies Act Amondtneut Bill, which J»» subsequently acknowledged was meant to defeat the alma of the Union Shippi*! Company's Benefit Sooiety.
