Sydney, June 18. At the election for Canterbury (four seats) the Hon. J. H. Carruthers, who held the position of Minister for Public Instruction in the Parkes Government, was returned at the head of the poll, and had a majority of nearly 3000 over the three successful labor candidates. The elections continue to excite the greatest interest, Of the fifty-three members returned the local optionists claim thirty-two. In last night's estimate most of the labor representatives were credited to the Opposition, but as they have determined to sit on the cross benches the following will give a better idea of the strength of parties:— Ministerialists, 26; Opposition, 9; Labor and Independent, IS. Received June 18tb, 7.50 p.m, Stdnby, June 18. Owing to a mutilation in a previous telegram the result of yesterday's election was in part wrongly stated. Mr Dibbs, the Leader of the Opposition, is not yet returned, but is a candidate in another election, which is fixed for June 22nd. Amougst the other prominent men rejected is Mr O'Connor, the Postmaster-General, and Mr Abigail. Reoeived June 19th. 12.43 a.m. Sydney, June 18. The Speaker, Mr Abbott, was returned unopposed.
