MALVERN.
The election for the Malvern Licensing Committee took place on Monday at three polling booths. More excitement was engendered over this election that at any previous ones, consequent on it being a trial of strength between the two parties. The result proved a win for the who -placed three men at the top of the poll, nut by narrow majorities. A large crowd •assembled to hear the final returns, but everything passed off very quietly. The results are—George Rutherford 94, Jas. Cunningham 81, John Fraser 81, Chas. Gamble 75, Chas. Beach 76, John Jebson 73, Jesse Prestidge 69, Geo. Robertson 68, Jas. Maxwell 65, A. J. Davev 6L First five elected. The polling to decide increase or otherwise' Of licenses was—-112 for and 292 against any increase. The Committee met yesterday. Licenses were granted to both the Sheffield hotels, as weS as to all others in the district. Mr M. Donnelly, solicitor, appeared for the Sheffield Hotel, for which a license waa granted after some discussion. *
(PKESS ASSOCIATION TBLBGBAMS.) BLENHEIM, June 2. The Licensing Committee yesterday granted renewals of all licenses, but cautioned the police to see that Sunday trading was put a stop to. AttheAwatere licensing meeting to-day the (Triaiirman alluded to the shocking quality of the liquor supplied in some country bouses, and suggested that the police should have it analysed occasionally. • WELLINGTON, June 2.
At Featherston the police reported unfavorably on the manner in which all the hotels in the borough had been conducted, and the Chairman of the Licensing Committee said that if tiie houses were not better conducted during the next twelve months they would be closed if it were within the law.
