LICENSING COMMITTEES.

CHRISTCHURCH NORTH-EAST.

The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christchurch North-East %»ok place at noon yesterday. f. J. Kimbell (chairman), J. V. Roes, B. W. Humphreys, J. P. Jameson, We.tenia. - - Inspector Pender was present on behalf of the police, and submitted the report on the houses in the district. Renewals. The following applications were toade for the renewal of licenses :— JOSEPH PEB—IXS, ALBION HOTEL. Granted to 11 p.m., and authority to extinguish lamps at 11 p. m. RUBIKA CONLAN, CRITERION HOTEL. The Chairman said the report on the house was not very satisfactory, and that the house was frequented by low characters at night. Mr Inspector Pender said he could not say that the house was badly conducted, but there were a number of spielers, &c, going in there. Sergeant Briggs reported that now Mrs Conlan was keeping the house better, but great difficulty was experienced when the theatre was open. The Chairman said the license would be granted, but every effort must be made to keep the house respectable. HENRY HADDBELL, MARKET HOTEL. This license was granted without remark. THOS. BROOKES, CENTRA!. HOTEL. Mr Inspector Pender said the house was very rough, and the licensee had been spoken to by the police frequently. Low people were allowed to remain in the house, which should not be. The applicant said he did not allow this. Mr Brookes said that it was a part of the city where these characters congregated, and he did hi 3 best to keep them out. He could not refuse to serve them, but he did not encourage them to stay. The Chairman said that Mr Brookes must be especially careful, as they had to do their duty, and there would be strict supervision. The license would be granted. H. W. CATJDWELL, VICTORIAN. The Chairman drew attention to the complaints with reference to Sunday trading. The license would be granted but it must be distinctly understood that Sunday trading must be discontinued absolutely. J. SWEENEY, GOLDEN FLEECE. The Chairman said the same complaint was made as to Sunday trading in his house. If the publicans did not take steps to stop Sunday trading the Committee would have to consider what they should do to put a stop to it. The Committee were determined to put an end to Sunday trading. Mr Inspector Pender said that the house was very well conducted. W. MCLEOD, FORESTERS' HOTEL. Thirt case was adjourned until June 16th, as there was a case of Sunday trading pending. HENRY A. KENT, PALACE HOTEL. ! The Chairman drew attention to the police report, that bad characters were allowed to congregate in the front bar. Mr Kent said that he took every precaution, and at great loss to himself cleared the men out when they had had a drink. The Chairman said that the license would be granted, but great care must be exercised in the conduct of the house, as the Cohr._ittee were determined to exercise a strict, supervision. JANE SIMMONS, OXFORD HOTEL. The Chairman said the report in this case was very good indeed. The license would be granted. W. SAVAGE, STAR AND GARTER. The Chairman said in this case the report was most satisfactory. The license would be granted. PATRICK MCGILL, GARRICK. The License was granted. Vf. F. (WARNER, COMMERCIAL. The Chairman said the report in this case was most satisfactory, and the license would be granted. Tho business then terminated.
