POLITICAL NOTES.
(By Telegraph.) (FROM OUR COBBESPOIfDHHT.J WELLINGTON, Ju_e_ Rdtiors have been afloat for some days that the Government have received letters from Sir W. Jervois, offering on certain terms to take the Agency-General for New Zealand, bnt the truth of the report has been denied. It now turnsoourt r however, that a communication has been received from the -e--Governor, and I am assured on what seems to be very good authority that some such offer as that above indicated has been made, but Ministers object to give any information on the subject. The idea of Sir W. Jervois ks our next Agent-General is immensely popular here. But it i» easy'to understand that it might not be so acceptable to the Government, who one may suppose would naturally prefer to utilise so rich a plum in the way of patronage in tiie manner usual among all MinistrieA The speech of the Minister for Lands is published here in extenso. It is generally regarded as a very able defence of Mr McKenzia's... land administration. . But it is disappointing in light of a disclosure of the Ministerial ' policy . and ' intentions. Indeed, as you wul have noticed, it gives far less information on these points than you have received long ago through my telegrams, much of it having been obtained! from the Premier himself. It has been decided that no regular meeting of the Opposition parly should be held until a full attendance is available, consequently there is no probability of such meeting taking place next Week. It will very likely be held during the following week..
