Tho evening was principally devoted to usiness matters in connection with two int r-Bociety ; debates—one in connection wit i the V.M.C.A. Literary Society, ite oth ir with Durham street Wesleyan Society —a id in connection with tho ladies' evening of tune 9th, the essay and elocution competition at the close of the session, and other business matters in connection with theJSociety. Tho real business for tho ana- f inawas prepared speeches, but time only - permitted of one being given, which was Mi exlellont one on " Reading," by Mr E» Torrance, and was briefly criticised by thott pspseut. Jlhe weekly meeting of the Lincoln \ Mutual Improvement Society was held at tie Lincoln Library, on Wednesduy evening list. The Rev. J. F. Teakle, Yico-Pren. Ant, was in the chair, and there was a Urge attendance of members. Two capital Asaya were given by Messrs W. A. Banks aid J. Sinclair, which wore most instructive, »ie former having for his subject "A tripM jfiie North Island," which was well discussed f y all present. 1 The St. Asaph street Mutual Improve* fient Association Society held their usual meeting on Friday evening, the President ia lie chair. It was resolved that instead ol fiie debate on the syllabus for noxt week, jne on "Would New Zealand benefit by federation Vbe substituted. Tho subjeci l>r the evening was an essay on " Self Cut lore," by Mr Hanan, which was well <u> fussed. 1A meeting of the Durham street Wesleysa Mutual Improvement Association was hew l&t Friday evening. Mr J. Mimni-g8 ooespied the chair, and a large attendance ol mfinbors was present. The evening W « d»eted to readings from colonial poet* Selections'were read by Mrs Coleman, Sears F.lTuriier, J.
