SENIOR MATCHES.
On Saturday afternoon the first round for the Senior Championship came to a termination. Umpires were abolished for the day, and the system of touch judges introduced by way of experiment. The referee, as a matter of course, thus had the complete conduct of the game. The innovation generally worked satisfactorily, yet it had its defects, and they were very clearly demonstrated. The system, however, tended to a faster game, inasmuch as there was a reduction in the number of stoppages and there were les3 appeals. The duties of the touch line judges were not onerou6, the man to windward having comparatively nothing to do. It lias been suggested that these gentlemen might be trusted with a little more power, extended to the placing of the ball in the scrummage, and such like work, which they could comfortably carry out. The positions of the clubs are as under :—
