COMMERCIAL.

Business in the import market durinS the paat week has been of a fairly satisfactory character, and deliveries of goods since the 25th alt. have been well up to the average. Transactions have been confined mostly to the supplying of current requirements, and purchases of a speculative character but few indeed. In Mauritius sugars, good to fine white crystals bave been placed in fair sized parcels at prices which can leave little margin to importers. Yellow crystals and browns have been difficult to place. A few sales of Continental granulated are reported at importers' rates. Teas of China, Indian and Ceylon growths, have met with a steady trade demand. A good inquiry exists for Chinas of low grades. Kerosene continues to sell at lace quotations. Candles have met witb improved inquiry as is usual at this season.. Dried fruits are without quotable change. Van Houten's cocoa has seen a brisker inquiry, and has been filaced at ordinary rates. Fry's has sold n trade parcels at agents' rates. Vestas, 1000's and 250's firm at lace quotations. Tinned fish meet with a slow demand. Fine and coarse salt have sold more freely at reaular rates. On account of paucity of stocks soda crystals have advanced to lancy prices for the time. In spirits there has has been an ordinary trado passing the demand being chiefly for Scotch whiskey; J.D.JfcLZ. Geneva, four-gaUou contents, has been in batter request. Port wine at from 8s 6d to 12s 6d LB. has sold at regular trade rates. Alo aud stout, by first bottlers, has met with an ordinary trade doqnond. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices by cable to the effect that rates of freight on fine and medium goods have been redused by 10s per ton _by mail steamer, and 5s per ton by cargo steamer.
