SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday. Present —Messrs D. McMillan (Chairman), H. W. Peryman, W. Boag, T. H. Anson, J. Rennie, W. Dunlop.
The Chairman stated that reports of the Finance Committee would be presented relative to officers' guarantee bonds. Letters had been received—From the Sheffield Domain Board and the Waddington Cemetery Board, recommending appointments to fill up vacancies on the Boards. From the Rakaia Road Board, asking the Council to provide planks for traction engines crossing the three bridges on Cordy's road. From the Rakaia and Ellesmere Road Boards, recommending a grant to the Dunsandel Domain Board. From the Prebbleton Domain Board, asking for a grant of JBI2. From the Rakaia Road Board, asking the Council to approve of the closing of a road. From the Surveyor-General, enclosing copy of proclamation placing Rakaia Gorge bridge under the control of the Ashburton County Couucil. From the Ellesmere Road Board, relative to the amount due on account of the Hospital and Charitable Aid. From the Police Department, relative to the registration of dogs. Reports had been received from the Inspector of Slaughterhouses ; from Mr Davis, in reference to the lease of Plantation reserve at Darfield; and from the caretakers of the water-races, with other matters relating to the waterrace question. The Finance Committee, having re-con-eidered the question of security to be given by the Council's officers, recommended that the old system be reverted to, and that policies be taken out by the officers in the Standard Insurance Company.
After Borne discussion, the report waa postponed until another meeting. Messrs John Fraser and W. Lillie were, as recommended, appointed to the vacancies on the Sheffield Domain Board, and Messrs R. Colthart and W. J. Taylor to the vacancies on the Waddington Cemetery Board. In reply to a letter from tbe Rakaia Road Board, the Council decided to provide planks for the use of traction engines passing over the three bridges along Cordy'e road, the cost to be / charged equally to the Rakaia and Lake Coleridge Road Boards. The Council granted £15 in aid of the Dunsandel recreation ground ; and £12 to the Prebbleton Domain Board (subject to the approval of the Lincoln Road Board) towards the cost of fencing the plantation from the recreation grOUlld. This was "agreed to. Mr Inspector Peuder -wrote, asking'the Council in. what localities they wished the police to collect the dog registration fees, and what remuneration would be allowed to the Registrars. The Council fixed the rate of remuneration at 10 per cent, on collars sold and half the fjnes recovered. The matter of appointing the districts was left to a Committee to arrange.
In connection with the Darfield reserve, the matter was referred to the Plantation Committee to deal -with.
The Slaughterhouse Inspector's report was read ana adopted. In respect of the application from the manager of the Bank of New South Wales, it was decided to obtain a report from Mr Wilson, on the Hororata water races, before granting the request. The water race matters were principally of a departmental character. Accounts amounting to .£448 133 2d were passed for payment, after which the Council adjourned.
