THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY.

Yesterday Chriatchurch waa en fcto in celebration of the aoveuty-second anniversary of the birth of the Queen. The weather was perfectly lovely; indeed, far more so than on any previous occasion, and amusement seekers had plenty of room for enjoyment. For those who are fond of the pomp and circumstance of glorious war there waa the field day of the Volunteers, when an imaginary enemy advancing pn Christchurch waa repulsed with enormous loaa by our brave defender*. Thea for those whose tastea are in the direction of athletic sporta, the gala at Lancaster lark provided ample means for gratification. Here were bicycle, running, and other events m profusion, and the admirable manner in which tUa arrangements were earned out added in no email degree to the enjoyment of the day. At the Lower Heatneote Racecourse the Club provided a most attractive programme which brought together a large number of visitors. The Salvation Army, ever on the alert to meeb the times, had provided a monster tea for tli exisiug general iou which waa well attended. The eoursuitf matches at Plumpton Park draw a goodly attendance, and there wcro also numbers who preferred the quiet enjoyment of a day at Sumnor or New Brighton to anything else, aud crowded the tram* during the day. In tho evening tlioro wore the Midgets at tho Oddfellows' Hall aud Madame Cora at the Theatre, so that the holiday was kopt up right royally until the last, Appended are the tlotaUa of tho >arioua events takiug place.
