DUNEDIN J.C. BIRTHDAY MEETING.

PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM. ]

DUNEDIN, May 23. Fine weather prevailed for the D.J.C. Birthday Meeting, which was fairly attended. The course was a trifle soft, but not muddy, and the racing was on the whole very interesting. A man named Smith, who had been disqualified by the Ashburton Club, was ejected from the course during the day. The Bum of £5444 went through the machines. The following are the results: — Handicap Hurdle Race of 100 soys; second 15 soys. About two milea. Mr F. Panetis' br g Wairua, by Somnus— Wairureka, 9st 121b .. (U. Laing) 1 MrD, Rutherford's ba Ahua, 12s t 121b (T. Stewart) 2 Mr S. Wright's b h Trimolite, lOst (Allen) 3 Little Arthur, list 81b; Inchkeith, 9st 71b ; Trapper, Jtet; and Smuggler, 9ac also ran. Little Arthur led for aome time, when Ahua took up the running. Half a mile from home Trimolite made an effort and passed Wairua for the moment, the latter, however, coming again very quickly and taking third place behind Ahua and Arthur. A quarter of a mile further on Arthur was done with, and Trimolite came again. Ahua and Wairua rose to the last fence almost together, but Ahua stumbled onalighting and this enabled Wairua to gain an advantage which he held all the way home, winning by nearly two lengths ; Trimolite half a length away third, and Little Arthur, Inchkeith, Smuggler, and Trapper following in that order. Time, 4min ISsec. Dividends—lnside £3 18s, outside £3 4s 6d. A protest on the ground of a cross at the last hurdle was dismissed after a lengthy consideration. Maiden Plate of 60 soys. From a good start all were well together for a quarter of a mile, when Lady Zetland and Crown Jewel took the lead. A little further on Don broke down. Idler was on terms as they led into the straight, and as Crown Jewel was under the whip, it seemed as if Idler must win, but at the home turn he was in difficulties, and utterly collapsed below the distance, and Crown Jewel won a well ridden race by a length and a half from Lady Zetland, who made a late rush, Langley a poor third. Idler, Dunmore, Tired and Blacklock followed in that order. Time 2min Dividends—lnside £2 7s 6d, outside £2 2s 6d.

Tempest got away rather the smartest from a good start, Hazel and Retina lying close behind as they came past the stand. After going half a mile Tempest was barely clear of Retina, Hazel third. A quarter of a mile further on Retina challenged Tempest, and disposed of her in a very few strides, and the Wellington owned mare, once in the lead, kept there, nothing being able to make her extend herself until well up the straight, when Palliser, who had seemed to be altogether done with at three furlongs from home, came gamely a second time under the whip, and made Ray ride the daughter of Iris, but the last mentioned, having any amount left in her, won easily by three-quarters of a length, Hazel nearly two lengths away. Tempest finished fourth, and then followed Occident, Coinage, British Lion, and Leinster. Time, 2min 44sec. Dividends, inside £12 6e, outside £15 os6d.
