THE AMERICAN MIDGETS.
These interesting little people made their first appearance at the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday night, when there was a very food attendance. Miss Clara Spencer and lr Lawton also appeared in conjunction with General and Mrs Mite. The little people were introduced by Mr E. F. Flynn, the rather of General Mite, who as he stood on the stage alongside them, loomed up like Gulliver amongst the Lilliputians. In the brief sketch of the life and history of General and Mrs Mite, Mr Flynn explained how the former came by his title. On one occasion, visiting at the White House, he was introduced to President Hayes, who conferred on him the honorary rank of a General of the United States army. The General and Mrs Mite, at the close of the, lecture, passed through the Hall, stopping to converse with various persons in the audience. The General is full of conversation, and delights in talking with anyone as to his travels, and also as to his appreciation of New Zealand. On Saturday night he conversed in German and in French. On . returning to the stage the General sang two or three songs, and also recited *' To be or not to be" very well , indeed. With Mrs Mite he danced a schottische with a good deal of grace. One of the. General's songs, "If I was only long enough.. is exceedingly funny. The little people also played in an adaptation of " The Barrister, played here by Mr Charles Warner, in which they are exceedingly funny. Miss Clara Spencer is a clever danseuse, and sings well. She was exceedingly good in the transformation dance and several songs which she gave with much spirit and effect. A duet with Mr Lawton, "A little peach of emerald hue," is sure to be popular from its quaint humor. Mr Lawton is very good indeed, both as a singer and a conversationalist. He sings and dances well, and both Miss Spencer and he help to make the entertainment bright and amusing. This afternoon there will be a matinee at three o'clock, and also on Wednesday and Saturday next.
