WELLINGTON, May 23.
lieutenant-Colonel Butts, who, on being retired from the command of the Wellington district, was gazetted to a full Colonelcy on the honorary unattached list New Zealand Volunteers, has addressed the following letter to the Minister of Defence:—
. Wellington, 22nd May, 189 L Sir, —With! reference to the recent " Gazette" notice, making mc Colonel on the honorary unattached list, I beg to inform you that I have no desire for such promotion, and according to No. 236 of the Volunteer Regulations, 1888, I do not think I should be placed upon that list against my wishes: I also maintain that paragraphs 234 to 238 of the regulations refer to Volunteers only, and not to officers on the Militia list.
