MR WILSON'S REPLY.
The following is the substance of the teply sent by Mr Wilson on behalf of the Midland Railway Company :— As to paragraph I—Ajs the Company's works had been stopped for many months awaiting the consent to the deviation the Company would at once call for tenders for the Kotuku section, and would let the contract with the usual provision for completion within the stipuW time. He only awaited further int met ns from England before letting tlu re ; of the deviation line.
As to paragraph 2—The difference shown between thg estimates of cost for the two lines was. only £700. The Company could sot give any further guarantee. - As to paragraph 3—The Company would Batten the grades on the constructed line, ■6 that they should not be steeper than 1 in 60 when the line is opened to Otira. ;As to paragraphs 4, 5 and 6—The Board had been notified of the agreement made With the Grey County Council, and had expressed their assent thereto; that he would if Government wished, though quite unnecessary, send the contract Home by first fnail for further consent; that he would deposit the £2700 immediately on getting a telegram that the consent to the deviation 'lutdJbeen given, subject to the deposit being made, and would also deposit the as already arranged, since this was made a condition of the deviation, though not a part of the original contract ; but the Tympany declined to deposit any further fJSneys. '
