The Bank of England returns, published to-day, show the total reserve in notes and bullion to bo £13,836,000. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 35,40.
Consols* 95£.
Three mouths' Bills are quoted at 4£ per cent., the market being excited.
Now Zealand Four per Cent, Ineoribed Stock 102#, Three and a Half per Cent. Inscribed Stock 95^. New Zealand long berried wheat 43a, market steady. New Zealand wheat ou passage, sellers are asking 435, but buyers will not give more than 42e 6d.
Canterbury mutton 4f d, Wsllington mutton Canterbury lamb s£d. New Zealand beef, forequarters 3 Jd, hindquarters 4sd. , Hemp is dull, and no sales are reported. Kauri gum is very steady. South Australian wheat, 44a, firm ; Victorian do, 43s 6d, eteady. Sugar—Best German beet, £13 11s 2d ; Java, 15s, nominal. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b, in Clyde, 545. The next series of Antwerp wool sales opens on June let. The sale will include 3500 bales cf Australian wool. Silver 3s 8d 5-16tha. It is reported that a syndicate of Germans and Italians has purchased fifty million roubles , worth of Uusaian wheat. A large comer in Paris is also reported. K*oelved May Utb. 7 P*™. Lokdom, May 23. The wool list has dosed. Antimony in quoted at £51. Lohdon, May 23. Frequent conferences have taken place lately between the Directors of the Bank of England and the Joint--8 cock Banka, with respect to strengthening the cash reserve of the Bank of England. It is understood the Banks are preparing for dasigere which are looming ahead in the financial market, hencsL~tfea cfcesire to have the reserves TUe Loan and Her. cantile Company, Limited have received the following cable message, dated London, 22nd May, 1891 :— Tallow-—There ie a fair demand. Good beef tallow hae advanced 6d per cwt. since last report. Frozen Meat—Market firmer. Prime New Zealand liunba are worth per carcase *4<i per lb. New Zealand beef, forequarters and hindquarters are worth 3§d and 5d respectively per lb. Other quotations unchanged einoe Isat telegram.
