ITFTY MTT-re ROAD RECORD BROKEN.
Yesterday morning Messrs C. R. and H. Wilson, of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, made an attempt to lower the New Zealand fiftymile road record of 3hrs 29£min, held by Mr J. W. Painter, of the Midland C.C. The first named was successful in accomplishing the task, covering the distance in 3hrs 21£min, which beats the previous record by fhnin. The course was the usual one, from the Riccarton Hotel to Leeston and back. The weather was highly favorable; a elight wind was blowing, which favored the riders on the return journey. The roads, however, were far from being in good order. The start was made at 9.3 a.m. Both riders kept together for the greater part of the distance; before reaching the Wheatsheaf, C. R. Wilson had the misfortune to spill through a horse shying, the rider's knees being cut somewhat badly. Leeston was reached in lhr 44min, and the return trip made in nearly 7min faster time. On passing the winning post, the rider was accorded a hearty round of applause from the spectators. It may be mentioned that Mr Wilson rode a 54in ordinary " Zealandia " roadster, built by Mr N. Oates, of Colombo street, and the bicycle, notwithstanding the spill, stood the test splendidly. H." Wilson rode a pneumatic tyred machine, also built by Mr Oates. His time for the distance was 3hxs 43min, which will probably stand as a record for this type of machine.
