The remits of the census of the colony taken on 6th April are as follows :—North Island, 274,263 persons; Middle and Stewart Islanda, 344,157; Chatham Islands, 269; Kermadec Islands, 19; total, 618,688. The above figures, which do nos include ths refe-Has of the Maori census, aro given subject to revisio-. In March, 1886, the census resufts were t—'North Island, -50,482j Middle and Stewart Islands, 327,801; Chat' ham Islands, 199 r total, 678,48-; show_J|f an increase of 40,206.
