MELBOURNE MARKETS.
The Nation--. Mortgage and Agency Company of New Z_a_and, Limited, report as follows under dace Melbourne, May llth :— We have had a week of cold wintry weather, and farmers are busy preparing the ground for seeding. It is believed that a much larger area will be sown, encouraged by this good season and good prices. Feeding grains continue advancing, speculators having come into the market. Several thousand bags of peas have been taken at 2s 9d, and stocks are now in comparatively few hands. Oats are now having attention, and are being Dought up with freedom, some on account of a New Zealand speculator, who evidently looks to our heavy tariff- to protect him. We quote good to prime stout Victorians at 2s 9d to tts; Danish, 2s 4d to 2s 9d ; long oats, -a 3d to 2s 6d: Algerians, 2s 2d to 2s 3d for good feed, to 2s 6d for seed samples, which are scarce. Maize has jumped to 3s 6d, at which we have sold trade lots. Cape barley almost nominal at 2s Id to 2s 3d. Bran, firmer, 10_d to pollard, scarce, at up to ls. Wheat—Quiet, owing to unfavorable London cable advices, value about 4s 9d milling. Flour—£lo to £12 for stone to best roller. Barley—Prime malting, 3s 4d to 3s 4Jd; good, 3s 2d to 3s 3d; other samples downwards to 2s 9d ; feed, 2s 2d to 2s 4d. Grass Seeds—Quiet; season almost over. Rye grass, 5s 6d to 5s 9d, and cocksfoot 5Jd to sfd, with almost no demand. Flax—Dull at £18 to £21 for fair to prime fibre. Potatoes—Firmer at from 55a to 655, with prospect of further advance unless deliveries increase.
