RUGBY UNION.

A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union was held yesterday afternoon at Warner's HoteL Present— The Rev. J. Hoatson (in the chair), P. West, W. G. Garrard, T. Reese, F. D. Kesteven, T. L. Smith, G. Harris, J. S. Hawkes.

The Canterbury College appealed against a try gained by Merivale in their match on Saturday afternoon last. The claim was based on the statement that the ball was thrown in by a Merivale man when it was a College ball, and that though Leach, the line Umpire, did not, it was asserted, hold up his flag, he gave it a Red, or College ball. The Referee wrote distinctly that Leach did not hold up his flag, and he (Mr Firth) submitted some suggestions as to the conduct of umpires in general by the Union. Correspondence was read from the parties concerned and the question discussed, after which the Committee dismissed the appeal upon the report of the Referee. It was, however, agreed to return the deposit in this and in a previous case to Canterbury College. Mr \V. J. Cotterill wrote, accepting a position on the Selection Committee for foreign matches, and the Rev. J. Hoatson informed the meeting that he would bo unable to serve on the same Committee. The action of the Secretary was approved in permitting the Christchurch Club to play an Association gome. The Nelson Rugby Union wrote that it so far did not see its way to send a team South. Mr Eden George offered a lady's bracelet, value £20, to be competed for among the junior flag teams, in order to increase the interest of the ladies in football. Certain conditions ■were attached to the proposal. The Committee agreed to accept the generous offer, but demurred to the conditions, which it decided should be drafted by the Union. The question of umpires and touch-line judges was discussed, and it was agreed to hola a sub-committee meeting on Thursday evening next to confer with gentlemen appointed by the Clubs as eligible for umpires. * It was agreed that the second round of senior matches should immediately follow the completion of the first round.

The meeting shortly after adjourned.
