AUCKLAND, May 14. A well-known settler of Tauranga, Mr J. Chadwiek, died last night of bronchitis. He came out to the colony over fifty years ago and engaged in the "cattle trade between Australia and New Zealand, afterwards taking military contracts. At the time of his death he was the proprietor and landlord of the Tauranga Hotel. In regard to the case of Webster v Greenway, in which Dr. Laishley raised an objection that defendant could not be served with a summons, as lie is in a Lunatic Asylum, Dr. Giles, R.M., stated to-day ho held the opinion the service of the summons had been a proper one, and ruled that the ease must therefore go on, unless the defendant could show cause why it should not. Such cause must, however, be actual substantial facts, supported by proper evidence.

The purpose of the case is to test the validity of an award by the arbitrators in regard to the rental of certain lands held under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act, and an old lease having been surrendered and a new one applied for. Argument had not concluded when the Court rose.

DUNEDIN, May 14. A boy named Martin lias been committed for trial for burglary on several charges.
