CABLE RATES WITH EUROPE.

TO THK EDITOR 07 TH- PRESS.

Sir,—lt is very tantalising to read of tha congratulations passing in Australia on the consummation of the long-wiahed-for reduction in cable rates with jfoirope, tending as it does to such an immense increase in the amount of daily hews received, and extension of facilities for commercial and private intercourse with the Old World) whereas we in New Zealand are kept out is the cold, owing to the refusal of our Government to participate in the anhaidy and guarantee. The chief axonso hitherto offered has been that of economy, but the greatly improved state of our publio tmances removes that difficulty, and it is to be hoped one of the first acts of our Ministry, on th< opening of Parliament, will be to recommend New Zealand retracing her steps in regard to a matter of such vital importance to the well being of this colony.—Yours, &o._, Progress.
