POLITICAL GOSSIP.

[By Telegraph.]

(from our correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, May 13.

It is eemi-officially denied that any new calls to the Legislative Council are contemplated by the Government, but the denial is qualified with the proviso that there shall be no obstruction on the Council's part to the proposed reform of that body. It is admitted, however, that a new batch of J. P. appointments will shortly be submitted to the Governor for approval.

During the last few days both the " New Zealand Times " and "Evening Post "have taken occasion to declare in their leading columns, and in a most emphatic manner, that they are not to be regarded as Ministerial organs. This is significant. It is stated that a more simple mode of School Committee Elections is about to be provided by the Government in a Bill which will be introduced during the coming session, the plan substituted by last year's Act having proved cumbersome and unsatisfactory.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)

WELLINGTON, May 13. The Government intend to have the Edwards case reported fully for the purpose of public records. The Minister for Education will initiate legislation for simplifying the voting at the election of School Committees.
