KINSEY and CO. 4068 . __ Just Rboei vc d. "THE BLACK POLICE," AN AUSTRALIAN STORY, BY A. J. VOGAN. «c mHE FIRST EDITION of an AUSTRAJ. LJAN STOKY." bearing the above title, and written by a well-known former resident of Auckland, has just reached New Zealand. The Book ia one of those works known as "novels with a purpose. In the course of his travels through the Australian wilds the author was shocked by the atrocities perpetrated upon the Australian Blacks. The pictures of Australian life and scenery in a rising goldfleld, upon out stations, and in the untroadeu wilds, are adoiirauly drawn, and the characters introduced interest the reader and excite strong feelings of sympathy or repulsion. One gets a better and altogether more humane idea of the Australian blaok m this book than perhaps any other work on the subject published eiuce Sir George Grey issued his narrative of Australian exploration fifty yeara ago. We have no doubt that the work, which is published in stroug boards at the low price of two shillings, will meet with a very large sale in this colony. Our London correspondent, writing i.i his literary notes remarks— Mesers Hucchinson have just published an attractively bouud novel called " The Mack Police." by Mr Arthur James Vogan, of Tauranga. The story opens in Queen street, Auckland, which ia picturesquely rather than realistically described. Mr Vogan enunciates strong views on the subject of woman-kind in the capital of NewSouth Wales. " Sydney," says our author. "ia a gigantic bait pond whore the wealthy debauchee can luxuriously roll in sin and feed, shark-like and unchecked upon the daughters of the colony."—" Auckland Star."
