PROPOSED NEW BRIDGE OVER AVON.

TO THE IDITOB 07 THE PBESS. Sib.—Mr Cuff, by his letter appearing in yesterday's issue, evidently does not relish the idea" , of a new bridge being erected over the Avon near Ward's Brewery. Perhaps he would prefer to see one erected somewhere near Littleover. If, as Mr Cuff asserts, most of our citizens admit that our city is better bridged than any city of its size in the world, I don't think they, or any one else, can truthfully say that a substantial bridge at the place in question is not only very desirable, but absolutely necessary. The present inadequate structure, which is to say the least of it, a disgrace to any city of its size in the world, and if I am not mistaken was never passed by the authorities, as the contractor for it has publicly stated that they would not pay him for the work. When the Council consider this question, it is to be hoped that they will not be influenced by the voices of disinterested persons, such as Mr Cuff certainly is, but to carry out the proposed construction, and thereby be bestowing a much needed want to the numerous inhabitants of , the district. I trust that there will be a< majority in the Council that "will allow", this work to be carried out. —Yours, &c, Resident. Christchurch, May 12th, 1891. '
