THE " SPIELING " FRATEK* NITY. An unusually large number of thorn parasites of society known as "spielers visited the Ashburton racecourse- on Wednesday and Thursday. Three o_ them carried on their business In sttch m open and barefaced manner as to bring themselves within the grip of the law. One was sentenced to six months' is»« Srisonment on Thursday. On Friday [enry Poppleton and Alfred Graham alias the " Chicken," were brought before Mr B. Alcorn and Mr Alfred Harris®-* J.P.'s., Poppleton being charged with the larceny of 10s, and the youth Graham with being an Idle and disorderly person? Graham was sent to prison for a month* Poppleton was represented by counsel, who did all an advocate could do to prove his client to be an honest man, and at one time there was a warm passage as arms between counsel and the Bench. Detective Neil gave accused a very bad character, describing him as one of tho " spieler fraternity " who frequented racecourses in quest of "flats," and that She was one of the most dangerous characters that could be at liberty. Counsel tried to prove that Poppleton was a jockey. " Whatl"exclaimed the detective, "Mra a jockey I No one would trust him with a horse." He had never known him do any work in his life. Constable Smart also S.ve accused a bad character. SergesMi oiler said that at present there we!e_ droves of these spielers in the colony, w they were a perfect nuisance. Aceaeca was called to give evidence In his own. defence. The salient points of his defence were that he had been convicted when a lad of tbe larceny of some ducks, and sent to the Industrial School. He had Iran away from that institution, had beoc since arrested several times for drunkenness, and was last week brought up at Timaro on a charge of the larceny of £2, He was a jockey by profession, and had ridden tn hurdle races in Wellington, and was " partly" engaged on Tuesday evening to ride Royalty at the Ashburton meeting. The Bench sentenced him to two month? imprisonment with hard labor.

IS IT SUICIDE? Mark Twain tells the story; that at th« inquest held on the body of BuckFanshaw —who during the delirium of a raging typhoid fever bad taken arsenic shot himself through the body, cut his throat, and jumped out of a four-storey window, breaking his neck—the jury, after dae deliberation, sad and tearful, bat with intelligence unbltnded by its sorrow, brought in verdict of "death by the visitation of God." Buck undoubtedly committed suicide, and so does everyone who neglects the first symptoms of approaching sickness and disease. Nature always gives ample notice of any disturbance of physical processes ; sometimes It Is neuralsia, some* times a sharp shooting pain In .tm abdomen or side, or a dull or throbbing headache; no two persons get the same symptoms. What yon have to do is to attack the first symptoms, for if consumption, dropsy, cancer, or Brkjfot'a disease once gets a start, you cs.nnqtj&i.Qp its headlong course to the grave, Theso are facts there Is no disputing, for all the medical skHl in the world cannot do much for you when real organic disease nsa,#otJ in. We emphatically.recoramend CiEMmrfa Tonic because we know by personal experience and by the evidence of innuaatial and reliable people who have used it that it will do good and prevent disease, Clements tonic is a medicine -tJsfS Invigorates and strengthens th© entire corporal organism; it does not only offasa certain members but strengthens the whole system, thus preventing the attafi&a of disease. The Tumut and Adeiong Times says:—* "Clbments* Tonic certainly deserves the popularity it has acquired, we bare had, proof positive, in cases (under our notice) in this neighbourhood? of its. valuable properties. Mr T. Garrett, M. P., says:—"l have taken Clements' Tonic with great advantage." Mr John Plummer.tFort street Stabile School) says, " Mra Plnmmer has frequently derived great benefit from th© use of Clements' Tonic." Mr S. D. Wood (Verger of All Saints Cathedral, Bathurst), writes:—"That ha found CLEMsarrs* Tomo a grand pick-me-up and it completely cured him of low spirits, indigestion, giddiness, and humming noises in the ears." , Mr G. Swan, Juuee Junction, who suffered from debility, cardiac weaves* and nervoasnoss, following on tymmo, took Clements' Tonic and say®, ,TM after taking six or seven bottles his nesita was fully restored, and that he can now eat anything and aar amount of work, whereas before wag Clements' Tonxo he could do none at ail. CLBMk*TS' Tonic can be obtained from all medicine dealers or from ff. _» &wSsB, Newtowa, Sydpoy, If^J
