PORTUGAL AND MASHONALAND.
STATEMENT BY LORD SALISBURY. fl_ft PJUCSS ASSOCIATION.] Beeeived April 34th. 705 p.m. London, April 23. In the House of Lords to-day the Marquis of Salisbury in referring to the promises made by Portugal with regard to Mashoualand, stated that Portuguese promises were seldom fulfiliad. Received April 24th. 8 p.m. Londof, April 23. In the House of Lords to-day the Marquis of Salisbury announced that the Porcuguese Government had ordered the removal of every obstacle interfering with the free navigation of the Pungue River and the passage into the interior, but said the demeanor of the Portuguese officials in Maehoualand was so unsatisfactory that three British warships had been ordered to rendezvous off the mouth of the river to protect British iuterests. The Premier further stated that a Consular agent had been sent to-Masbonal_nd to see that the terras of the modus yiweiidi were respected. It is now expected that tho question of further reparation by Portugal will be reserved for the present. Koceived April 21th, 1 a.m. The Marquis of Salisbury has received a report respecting the Portuguese in Mashonalaud.
