ST. LUKE'S CONCERT.
TO THB BDITOB OF THE PBBSS. Sir,—The recent concert in aid of St. Luke's Church was noteworthy in two particulars, viz., in the excellent rendering of an exceptionally excellent programme of music, and In the absence of " encores" throughout the evening. The wish of the musical.director, as appended In a footnote to the programme that no item be re-demandetl, was respected by the large audience present, the applause at the same time being of the heartiest description, and the result was the thorough enjoyment of a high class entertainment of a rational lenetb.
The system of " encores" prevailing at Christchurch concerts has become all but intolerable, it being frequently the rule for the greater number of the Items ou a programme to be re-demanded without any discrimination whatever. It i« needless to point out that between waut of warmth on the part of an audience and a demand for repetition there exists a wide difference, una if St. Luke's concert should prove to be the inauguration of a better state of things for the future, Mr Normltigton will have earned the thanks of the conVmunity, as he has already done of those who listened to the admirable eutertainmeut provided for them by him on Thursday evening.—Yours, &c,
