PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
An o-fdlnanr monthly meeting of tha Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held at the Municipal Chambers at noon yesterday, when there were present—Messrs S. Manning (la the chair), J. H. BAtket. J* C. Prudhoe, W. Recce, Bey. RaWM Chadowskl, Rev. T. Flavell, and A. W. Smith, assistant Secretary and Inspector The Inspector reported that during th« last month he had visited Lytteßod, Sydenham, Woolston, Liuwood, Addington, and the markets in Christcburch. He had received Information that a horse was left lyiug on the ground to a paddock near Sunuyside. He ascertained that tho animal had received every attention, but as lb became worse the owner had had It killed. Eighteen cautious had beenglvea during the mouth, and thirty-three horse*' examined for wounds.
Tbe report was approved. The Assistant-Secretary was gives authority to write to the other so-cieUet in New Zealand aud ask them to combine in petitioning the Government to allow the societies tree postage
Tbe Assistant Skciustary -reported the arrangements made to open a branch ot the Society at Ashburton on Wednesda*y next. Messrs Murphy, Loutaaon, ana himself would attend the meeting to to held on that evening. Mr Parkek stated that he had recently been in Auckland, and he found upon enquiry that the public abattoirs had been' a success, both Uuancially and practically. Latterly, however, several small butchers had slaughtered lv their own yards, and the returns had fallen off somewhat The preseut Slaughterhouse Act allowed them to do so, and the Act would have to ho amended before the proposal could oa carried out successfully. After some discussion it was decided to write to the Selwyn County Council and other local bodies ou the subject, and torward the luiormation given re the Auckland abattoirs, and to appoint a deputation, consisting of Messrs Murphy, Her. T. FlaveU, and Rev. Rabbi Chadowskl. to wait, on the Selwyu County Council at their next nicotine. It was also decided to write to the Medical Society for tools support lt was reported that Mr Murphy had received about forty children's essays, and the Rev, T. FlaveU and Mr Murphy w*r*s appointed to examine them. The credit balance of the Society that day was stated to be £& 15s od. The Rev. T. Flavell said he was about to visit England, aud he would do' what he could for the Society there, and would report to the Home authorities What had been done in the colouy. After transacting some routine business the Committee adjourned. ,'
