WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
The morning session of the Ooavention was held yesterday in the Provincial Council Chambers. The devotional exercises commenced at 9.15, presided over by Mrs Packe, who. read Romans xiL, and spoke to the subject of " Ministry." At 10 a. in. the National President took the chair. There was a good attendance of officers and delegates. Afc.ec the minutes of last Executive had been read and cou firmed, tue ♦President briefly but earnestly addressed the Conveution, urging workers to take as their watchword, "Bβ strong and work, for I am witn you, saith the Lord." Invitations hud been received from Unions in Victoria and America to send delegates to Con ventions to be held in May aud November respectively. Members were reminded of their obligations wich regard to grocers' licenses, ' weariug the blue ribbon, and ttie opening of all meetings with Bible reading aud prayer. The standing order for all Christian workers should be, "Believe on. the Lord Jesus Christ," and love one auoDher. The address was received with thanks and carried by acclamation. A telegram conveying greetings from the Convention to the Wesleyaii Conference now sittiug in Aucklaud was sent. A letter from Mies h\ E. Williard was read, referring to the cruelties practised in the seal foneries of Newfoundland. Miss Powell, of Invercargill, to whom the letter was addressed, also sent the substance of a letter ou the same subject from Miss F. P. Cobb, of England. The uutiuisiied business from last Convention was next considered. The meeting closed with the Doxology and Benedictiou at li noon. All friends interested are invited to attend these meetiugs. . The afternoon session opened at 2 p.m. Letters were received from Mrs Whitney, from Mr* A. Butler, South Africa, Miss Anua Gordon, of America, Superintendent of Loyal Temperance Legions. After the minutes had been reao. and confirmed, tue reports of work ftom various Union* were road, viz., Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Napier, Nelson, lavercargill, Lytteitou, Asnburton, Rxugiora, Tima.ru, Kaiapoi, Port Chalmers, Mosgiel, West Taieri, and the Oauiaru Young Wouteu'e Uuion. Earnest aud vigorous work has beeu done through the year, particularly in the direction of women's franchise, social purity, licensing elections, scientific temperance instruction in schools, aud literature. The' 'balauce-sheet of the Treasurer was read, and, after some discussion, was adopted. The balance beiug on the wrong side, appeals were made for local Unions to' make special efforts to fill the National Treasury. The meeting closed with the Doxology and Benediction at 4.45.
