Drunkenness.—For first offences of this kind two men were fined each ss, or in default the usual alternative.
Alleged Perjury.—Win. Levy, a Maori, was charged with having on December 24th committed perjury in the course of evidence given by him in a sheepstealing case. Inspector Peuder applied for a remand. Mr Stringer, who appeared for the prisoner, did not object, and a remand was granted till February llth, bail being granted, the accused in £50 and two sureties in £25 each.
Alleged Attempted Fraud. —John Thomas, a bootmaker, was charged with having, on January 23rd, endeavored to obtain from Michael O'Brien, the sum of £12s 6d, by means of forged entries. Mr Slater appeared for the accused. The evidence was that he was a workman in O'Brien's factory, where the men are each supplied with a pass book in which, when work i. given out to them, it is entered on one side; when the work is returned finished, an entry is made on the other side by the receiver, anil on that „ie workman is paid. The accused received and returned on separate occasions six pairs uppers for maids' boots and six pairs uppers for women's boots, and the'receiver marked as correct these figures. When the pass book was handed in by the' ac.used the figures had been altered, from ti to 26 in the first case, from 6t016 in the other. Tbe alterations were detected, and the accused was nou paid. If he had been paid he would nave received £1 2s 6d more than the wotk was worth. After this evidence bad been given a remand was made till February 12th for the attendance of another witness. Bail was allowed, accused in £50, and two sureties in d_2s each.
