GREYMOUTH LETTER.

[FROM OPTt CORRE9PONDHNT.J _, January 17. _The tug Westland returned on Tuesday from the South, having successfully ao complished the task of towing the drodge on from Lyttelton to Westport. The Westland will remain here in charge of the harbourmaster, who will work the vessel with his own crew when necessary. The only permanent hand retained on board is Mr David Hood, the engineer, so that the working expenses have been, reduced to a minimum.

Gold to the value of £60,000 was shipped I away by the Mawhera hist week—a good start for the new year, and a proof that the late wet season has been favourable to the mining industry. It is understood that the miners are holding over a lot of their gold till after the 31st of March, as the abolition of the duty takes effect on the Ist of April next. " I stated some time ago that the seam of coal in the Blackball Goal Company's mine had been struck, and that it was probable active operations for opening up this splendid field would be taken In hand at an early date. I understand that all the necessary plans and specifications for the bridge over the Grey river, and the short line of railway to connect the mine with the Midland Hallway Company's line at Nelson Creek, have been forwarded to head-quarters, so we may expect to see tenders called for the work very shortly. The representative of several large English eolleries is at present on a visit to Greymouth in connection with one of the Coal Creek Coal Companies, and it is quite possible something will be done very soon to start one, or perhaps both, of these undertakings. .The Grey Borough Council, having decided to erect a town hall at a eosfc of two or three thousand pounds, competitive designs for which are now under consideration, appear determined to carry oat the project, notwithstanding the opposition shown by a large number of ratepayers, who contend that the present building is sufficient for our present requirements, and that the money, instead of being devoted to providing the town with a snowy edifice, should be expended upon initiating a system of drain- ; age—a most urgent and necessary work that should have been taken in hand years ago. Avery strong feeling on the subject appears to be gaining ground, and it is openly stated that if the Council persists in its determination to proceed with
