A painful accident happened In Lyttelton yesterday by which a fine young man named Paul Sneddon alias Brant, aged about 35 years, and holding the position oC boatswain on board the barque Albuera, lost his life. He was a passenger by the L4O train from Lyttelton for Chrietcburch, and as the train was leaving was standing on the carriage platform of a second chm carriage. Juet as the train was turning the curve .leading to the tunnel he samehow lost his balance and fell off the carriage backwards on to a point lever and fractured the base of his skull, and a quarter of an hour afterwards expired. The accident was witnessed by Dr. T. W. Pairman and Mr J. G. Garforth, who immediately ran to the poor fellow, and carried him into the Casual Ward, where Dr. Pairman attended him. Hβ was, however, beyond any human aid, and succumbed to the injuries received. As soon as the fatality was known, the flags on the Albuera were lowered halfmast. Deceased was a native of Alioa, Ayrshire. It may be as well to mention here that numbers of passengers by the trains make a practice of standing on the carriage platforms when the trains are in motion In defiance of the caution on every carriage warning passengers of the riafc they run. _■
