A beauiful morning tempted a large number at regular' race goers "to leave Cbristchurch for Hororata yesterday, and the drags of Messrs Vaile, Woods, and Dal wood from town, were, heavily freighted from the Coalgate Bail way Station to the Hororata racecourse, and as usual there was a large turu out of settlers and their families and connections, although early harvesting operations took many away from the immediate district. The course, like all the land about, looked very much in want at rain and wore a brown, parched appearance, though it was not so hard as last year. There was plenty of dust flying after the first race or two, which was very annoying. The Stewards and other officials attended to their work in a busi-ness-like manner, and were courteous and obliging, and in their Secretary and handicapper, Mr J. Cresswell, they had an officer who helped to make their duties light. The nor'-west wind was a bit of a scorcher, bat a recent addition to the prand stand, including a weighing-room. Press room, and Stewards and Press enclosure on one end of the stand, was much appreciated. The Hurdle Race was a match between Romulus and Ivanhoe, and though the former jumped very badly the pace suited him, and be galloped over Ivanhoe at the finish, and before the judge's box was reached came to the front. The farmers sent. eleven horses to the post for the Farmers' Plate, a district event, and Ring of Ulster, a rather plain and leggy but game son of St. George, snowed superior pace in the last half-mile, and won comfortably. The Cup was a splendid race, and at the turn there was little to choose between three or /our of the competitors, hut Breadalbane running the stronger got home from Bosebud, with nothing to spare, by a length, and once more showed that he is not quite the rascal he was voted a short time back. Catamount, as usual, ran disappointingly. Liquidation tried gamely, but was not equal to the task, aud Harkaway was eased up when ie was found that he had no chance of winning. The trot fell to Mr Cress well's gelding Roy, ridden by his owner. Ellen was the favorite, but broke several times. Mr White handicapped for this Then came the district welter handicap, in which Preston was made favorite, King of Ulster having a penalty of 7ib for winning the Farmers' Plate, but he again proved victorious, though Derritt almost succeeded in snatching the victory from him with Coinage. Loiter wontheNuvel Rice verycomfortably from his opponents Nipper, Paddy and Breeze, and Breadalbane put up a 71b penalty for winning the Cup, and then literally romped over Ine2 and the six others that opposed him in the New Year's Gifc; and Catamount, who was indulged with the lead in the -Consolation, managed to score a win. from Inez, Coinage and Mpper; and this broughc the meeting td a close. £1629 was passed through the totalizator duing the day.
