FORGERY OF A TELEGRAM.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] INVEBCABGILL, January 8. A case involving a charge of an unusual character was disposed of in the Gore Resident Magistrate's Court, to-day, before Mr Revell. Oue Mortimer had a trotter mare in his possession, about the antecedents of which there Was a little mystery. She was advertised- for sale, and.immediately before the auction, Mr Green, the auctioneer, received telegraphic instructions, purporting to be from Mr Taggart, of Dunedin, to buy her for him, with authority to bid up to a pretty stiff price for an animal without a history. Mr Green bought the horse and informed Mr Taggart, who replied that he never sent the telegram. Investigation showed that someone had posted a telegram copy in the travelling post office between Gore and Balclutha, addressed to a wayside postmaster, with stamps and a request to wire to Mr Green. Suspicion fell on Mortimer, and he was charged with a breach of th c Electric Lines Act. Mr Revell found the charge proved, and fined the accused £20 and costs £19 18s lid, ia default three months' imprisonment.
