THE LATE BAND CONTEST.
A general meeting of the Christchurch | Band Contest and Art Union Committees ! met at FachV Wellington Hotel on Satur- ' day evening. There , was a fair attendance, and Mr W, F. McLean presided. The balance sheet submitted by the Hon. Secretary, Mr W. Mansell, showed re-1 ceipts £314 03 10d and the expenditure, including the deficiency of £94 Tβ 4d under the late band contest, was £230 5s 10d, leaving a credit cash balance of £83155. • The assets were £33 and liabilities £17 4s 3d, which made the total credit balance £99 10a 9d. The Chairman. said that all must he satisfied with the way matters had turned out, and that the Committee had such a large credit balance after meeting all liabilities. It was decided to make a claim for the amount realised by the dancing board at the Labor Demonstration, and to remit the money to the Lyttelton lumpers. The balance-sheet was unanimously adopted. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Grierson for gratuitously auditing the balance-sheet. Mr McCullougb moved— "That a bonus of £10 10s be paid to Mr Manaell in recognition of the highly successful manner in which he had performed the duties of hon. secretary." Mr Gordon seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously, lit was resolvedjthat the tin collection boxes be handed over to the Committee of the Band Association. Mr Mansell returned thanks for the Committee's acknowledgment of his services, but seeing that it bad been decided to divide a surplus, if any, pro rota among the bands selling tickets in excess of their garantee he must decline to receive a mis. He had done no more work than other members of the Committee, and he had been, sufficiently rewarded in, seeing i such a large credit balance. The Chair- ! man, Mr McKillop, and others urged Mr ; MppgpU to re-consider his decision, as they felt that the amount was not commensurate with the services rendered, but they had voted the amount as some alight recognition of those services and not as a payment. Mr Mansell ultimately agreed to accept the bonus, and said be would purchase with it something that would always remind him of the Committee's kindness. It was decided to distribute the seoresof " Beethoven," the test piece at the band contest, between the focal bands. It was stated that there were about twenty art union prizes unclaimed, and it was resolved to advertise that they would be sold unless claimed by the end of January. A hearty vote of tfmnlra was passed, on the motion of Mr McKUlop, seconded by Mr Hancock, to the hon. Treasurer, Mr McCullough, for the valuable services he bad rendered, both In work and advice, in connection with the band contest and" the art. anion.
