HOLIDAY AT KIRWEE.

The athletic sports which were formerly held on Boxing Day wm this year amalgamated with tbe newly formed Mid' land Cycling Club's Bicycle Races, and the Courtenay Horticultural Society's Flower Show, and held on Friday, 12th inst. The day being fine there was a very large gatheringfrom all the surrounding districts. An interval of an hour was allowed' during which a capital dinner, provided by Mrs Bowers at the hotel, was partaken of, after which toasts werepropesed and responded to by Sir John Hall and the folio wing officials connected with the sports: Messrs T. H. Anson. |J. Gough (judges). Captain Tosswill (starter). Rev. Fynes Clinton (referee), Mr C. J. Denby (captain). CYCLHfG AND ATHLETIC SPORTS. The arrangements for the sports were very complete, and the meeting was a pronounced success. The following were the results :— One Mile Maiden Bicycle race—First heat: C. J. Denby 1, T. Finlay 2, G.E. Davies 3; won with ease in Smin 44 3~sth sec Second heat: W. Turner 1, A. Thome 2, G. Anson 3; a good finish; time, 3min _2.cc Final heat: W. Turner 1, C. J. Denby 2, A. Thome 3; a close finish; time, Smin _lsec 100 Yards Flat Handicap; twelve started —Final heat: R. Thomson, 4yds, 1: W. Cook. 3yds, 2; A. Mcßeath, 3yds, 3; a good race; time, lOsec Three-mile Bicycle Race —C. Roper, 80yds, 1; W. Turner, S2oyds, 2; J. B. Clarkson, scr, 3. Ten started. A very good race. Time, lOmin _2_ec High Jump—A. Mcßeath, sft Bin, 1; W. Cook also jumped sft 3in. Six competed. A protest against Cook was left undecided. Half-mile Bicycle Handicap—First heat: C. J. Denby, 55yds, I; J. B. Clarkson, scr, 2; C. Roper, 20yds, 3. Won easily. Time, lmin 30 l-sth sec. Second heat: L, He-Trie, 30yds, I; J. W. Fainter, 10yds, 2; A. Wilson, 80yds, 3. A very close finish, Herwin winning by a few inches. Time, lmin SOsec Final heat: C. J. Denby 1, J. W. Painter 2, J. B. Clarkson 3. The winner, going well from the start, was.never headed. Time, lmin 39sec 440 Yards Hurdle Handicap—A. Pearse, 20yds, 1; W. G. Cook, scr, 2; W. Mangln, 18yds, 3. Four started. Won by six yards. Time, lmin 3sec One Mile Bicycle Handicap, open to members of the Midland Cycling Club only—G. Roper, 25yds, 1; W. Turner, 80yds, 2; A. Thome, 55yds, 3. Ten started. Roper won by ten yards. Time, Smin 27sec. One Mile Flat Handicap—J. Sadler, scr, 1; W. G. Cook, 15yds, 2; G. Dixon, 20yds, 3. Nine started. Sadler passed all his men half a lap from home, and won very easily. Time ,4min 43sec. ... 440 Yards Maiden Amateur's Race, for Mr Anson's cup—Meekan 1, Lloyd 2, Drummond 3. Eight started. A good race for second placeFive Mile Bicycle Handicap—C. Roper, M.C.C., 180 yds, I; J. B. Clarkson. 8.T.C., scr, 2 ; L. Berwin, M.C.C., 130 yds, 3. Seven started, but only the three placed men were going at the eighth Lap, when Clarkson caught the others, and all three keeping well together made a splendid race, lioper winning by. five yards, Herwin twenty yards behind Clarkson. Time, iSmin 22sec. 220 Yards Handicap—C. Dixon, 2yds, 1; Thompson, 3yds, 2; Cook, syds, 3. Ten started. Dixon was in front half way- up the straight, and won easily by a yard. No time taken. Ticket Race, 120 yards, was won by Mr S. Anderson'* ticket; Eighteen started. Boys' High Jump—Finlay 1. Four entries.
