DOMAIN BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Dom&ii Board was held yesterday at the Cite Council Chambers. Present—Messrs I«. Harper (Chairman), Murray-AynsJey, A. Leon (Secretary), the Mayors of Christchurch and St. Albans. The following correspondence was read: —From the head gardener and Park Banger, with reference to the increase oi salary granted to them, by the Board. I The Chairman reported that the ride Iα ! the Park had been put in order/and with [regard t0 th® trees which had failed fresh ones had bean planted. Tne s^JM&laing trees marked to come down had been brought dowcj.aad the result was a great improvement. The contractor for the removal of the trees had done his work well, and instead of the ruthless destruc* tion spoken of, hardly enough had been done to enable the trees to grow properly. The report of the Executive Committee was read dealing with the work which had been carried out in the Park and Domain. An application had been made I for the formation of an asphalt tennis* I court in the gardens, but the Executive Committee did not recommend the granting of the request. It was proposed to alter the present cottage in the nursery, and put it in repair, at a cost of £32. The reports of the head gardener and Park Banger were laid before the Board. The Sechetaby reported that there was about£234 in hand.
The Chairman said the head gardenex proposed to have a plant pump to water the borders. It was proposed to have a tank sunk, and with canvas hone they could shifb the pump about and wotes from 200 ft to 300 ft. The soil in the borders, was very sandy and dry, and wanted plenty of water. The cost of the plane pump, as proposed, would ha under £20. The Mayok of St. Albajw moved— "That the Board authorise the procuring of a pump for wateriux the gardens, at a cost not exceediafr £20." This motion was seconded by the Mayer of Christchurch, and agreed to. It was resolved to carry out the repaira to the cottage aa suggested. The report of the head gardener dealt with the works carried out by him during the quarter. The plauta, &c, iv the gardens were, considering thedroughr, in very good condition. ' The sandy nature of the edit "prevented the germination of the seeds, but ho had carried out a system ol transplantation which " had been ve*y eucceosful. Messrs Veitch of London hud kiudly sent a nandaorne donation of seeds of hardy and eeini-hardy and burbaceoue plants, which" were very welcome. It was resolved to pa** a voto of ihanfce to Messrs Veitch for their. donation oi seeds.'
The report of the Park Ranger, which was very voluminous, made certain proposals as to the fences, &c The Chairman mentioned thae all the gates in Che Park hud been altered so us to admit perambulators, a boou which would no doubt; be appreciated by - the nursemaids. -Bicycle riders were allowed to take their machiues tluough the open part of the Park bat hod on the p;tths. . In auswer to a questioa Xioia the Mayor of Sfc. Albans, The Cualuman said that flovwr stealiug Iα the gardens had not been bo rife au formerly. Mr A.TXSXJEY thought tliat the Board shbnid strictly adhere to their by-laws with regard to bicycles. The Chaibmajst said that as they had admitted peratjbulatoM, bicycles pushed by their riders might also be admitted. He thought that if the. Executive were authorised to give mieh instructions &.i they deemed necessary as to the matter of bicycles, U would meet the matter. Mr Avksley still thought they should not allow the by-law to be broken. 1C bicycle riders vrunted to ci'oss the parU they must push them. It was resolved that the by-law as regarded bicycles be strictly enforced, buc that riders be allowed to push their bicydee through the park. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, asking for a return ia compliance with au order of tbo House ol Ilepresentatlve3—(l) The revenue of the Board for the period ending 31st March, (2) The amocmt ol office expenses, ealarlee, &c. (3) The re venue of the Board for the yenr. • , Toe Secbetaby stated that he had com* plied with the request. The meeting then adjourned.
