RIVER BOARD.
An ordinary monthly meeting of the South Waimakariri River Board was held at 2 p.m. yesterday, when there were present—Messrs H. W. Peryman, H. Crooks, P. Hill, T. Wilson, and R. W. England. In the absence of Mr W. Boag (Chairman), who sent an apology, Mr England was voted to the chair. The Overseer reported that during the {tast month two small floods had occurred n the river, but no damage had resulted to the upper works. He had placed 43 trucks of stone in the front ot No. 6 groin, and that groin would require a new wing, as the river came in badly at that point in low water. The sum of £40 had been spent in labor at Cheney's during the month, and £22 4s at the upper works. The materials used were 72 casks of cement, and 105 woolpacks at the upper works, and 43 tracks of stone and 8 cwt of No: 12 wire at Cheney's. Twenty-five trucks of stone had been received at Chaney's, and it wonld require another 160 trucks for the two places. It was resolved to procure 100 trucks of stone in all from the Railway Department, but not to put in any more at No. 6 groin at present, the balance not used to be kept as a reserve. A letter was read from the Board's solicitors (Messrs Garrick and Co.}, stating that the Board undoubtedly had the power to discontinue the maintenance of any work, and, under ordinary circumstances, without incurring any responsibility. If, however, any work which the Board had executed, and which while maintained caused no injury to land, should become a cause of Injury by reason of the Board ceasing to maintain it, the owners would be entitled to compensation. The letter was received. A letter was read from Mr Acton-Adams, stating that it was only during shearing time that his sheep trespassed on the Board's plantation reserve. They had since been removed. The letter Was considered satisfactory. After transacting some routine business and passing accounts to the amount of £5410s 7d the Board adjourned.
