ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE.
A meeting wan held at the ato Council Library.'yesterday afternoon, of the Canterbury Committee appointed to; make arrangements for the reception of visitors to the meeting, in January next, of the f Australian Association, for Advancement of Science. JElis Worship the Mayor was voted to the chair. There was a fairly good attendance. Several apologies for absence were received. Professor Hutton said he had received, a letter from Sir James Hector stating that his Excellency tbe Governor would be present at the Association's meeting, provided nothing cropped up to prevent Professor H_ _toh knew of nothing to prevent his Excellency coming, unless it might be a Native meeting at Napier. Reports were received from the local sub-Committees. The Reception Committee had issued the hand-book, which members bad already bad. and steps bad been taken to ascertain who would invite the prominent members to their houses, and a number of gentlemen bad promised to do so. The Excursion Committee bad issued a small circular of the excursions arranged and definitely settled. The Entertainment Committee reported having made several'arrangements. On one evening there would be an address by Mr Mannering, with limelight views, on the glaciers of the Tasman Valley; on another there would be a lecture on oysters and oyster cdltivatioa by Mr S. Kent, .Commissioner of Fisheries in Queensland. Mr Tendal would give a history of vocal music from the fourteenth century, and, selections would be given by the Cathedral choir. On the last evening of tbe meeting there would be an oratorio at tbe Cathedral. ,,■ - - i Prof. Hutton mentioned fchat the C.J.C had lent a room wbere members could go in an evening and have a quiet smoke, 'tie wished the programme put In hand in order co be Issued, if possible, by tbe loth inst. The number of members belonging to the Association this year who had paid their subscriptions was 600 throughout the colonies; 450 were in Australia and 150 in New Zealand. Of tbe latter seventy belonged to Christchureh and seventynine to other parts. He hoped the Christchurch number would be increased. There ; were, so far as he kuew, 130 members of, the Association coming here. Nine of these -were-ladies. He then explained that a member's subscription included a transferable lady's ticket. Any subsequent lady's ticket would be ss. It was pointed out that no one would be allowed the privilege of attending the meetiogs of the Society or tbe entertainments unless they were members or possessed the necessary tickets, and iwas further emphasised that no one but a member could purchase a lady's ticket. The following gentlemen were added to the General Committee:—The Hon. J. T. Peacock, Messrs P. Cunningham, W. B.: Perceval, A. E. G. Rhodes, W. P. Cowlishaw, J. D. Enys, W. G. Rhiud, E. A. Worthy and R. W. Fereday. Messrs Rtiind, Cowlishaw and the Hon. J. T. Peacock were added to the Entertainment Sub-committee, and Messrs Perceval and Rhodes to the Reception Subcommittee.
It was suggested to the Eatertainment; Committee to consider tbe advisablenese of holding a conversazione in the Museum or elsewhere ou one of the two evenings which were vacant. .
Professor HuxxoN announced with pleasure that the Association bad been granted the use of the Provincial Council Chamber in which to hold the lectures and meetings. It was decided to call a meeting for Tuesday (to-day), at 4 p.m., of the Entertaiument Sub-committee.
In answer to a question, the Secretabt said that the excursions wouid not trench on the funds, as those gentlemen availing themselves of these excursions paid tbeir own expenses. ~ After a general talk ovet matters, the proceedings closed.
