~;fhe general tvmff I9f»1 psaC members of Booed cf eent&tiveefesokplfteeyeaterday. Appended are the results of the polling , :—

gHRISTCHURQIL 'The finale to the political excitement which has reigned in the city, and, indeed, throughout-.she colony, for soma weeks past,- came yesterday, thoush outwardly there was not a very large display of excitement until the evening. . The streets were almost aa deserted as on a holiday, except that cabs and other vehicles were to be seen busily en* faged in the work of conveying the btero to the polling booths. At the principal polling place, the Provincial Council Chamber; there was but little excitement throughout the day, the voting going steadily on,.but no demonstration of any kind being, made. At the Odd* fellows' Hall there was a much larger gathering, and some considerable amount of fun went on during the day.. The voting at the Oddfellows' Hall was very heavy. Mr Mursay and his assistant* having ali their work to keep pace with tho demands of the voters, whacama in steadily and in large batches. This was particularly.the case- between twelve o'clock and one, and after-five o'clock! At Selwyn street, and at Sydenham the voting went on steadily and .quietly, and /the same was the case at St. Albans..and Kuigbtstown. As the time wore on for expecting the declaration of the poLL the streets in front of the two ■ newspaper offices were crowded with people. This was particularly so in front 0f... The PBESa Office, where a dense crowd had collected. Arrangements had been made whereby the returns from the different poll* ing. .places...were .displayed by means of lime-light.on a screen in front of one of the windows. (Aa each name went ub with the figures attached thereto, a storm of cheers or groans, according to the political feeling, of the crowd, went up. Tbp crowd thickened as the night wore on, and-the office of this journal was besieged ,by eager enquirers as to tha result- of .the various elections ip different parts of the colony. The returns came to hand pretty rapidly/and were displayed most expeditiously. About 9.30 p.m. a 3 drag and four horses loaded with people and having a band playing ff See the...Conquering Hero," careered through the. streets, someone on the. box aeat. shouting out in exultant, tones " Tanner is in." The streets by this time Were full of people, the side walks being difficult to get along ao crowded were they. Owing to. the..doing away with .the. declaration by .Returning Officers there were no gatherings round the different polling places, the great centres of attraction,, as already stated, being the newspaper., offices,. At the Provincial Council, which was the principal polling place fori .CbrA«tobi|rcb, Mr G. Le»Ue: Lee was the Returning Officer, with Mr Turner as his deputy. At the Oddfellows' j Hall. Mr Murray was the Deputy Re turn-, | lug.Officer.in charge, and at'Sydenham Mr Charles' Allison. At St. Albans ;Mr Beatson / acted, and at Knight 9to wn Mr Jekyu. The' work of making up... the votes at the Provincial Council Chamber was carried out The same may be s»id of »Mr Murray at the Oddfellows' Hall, whem .the largest number of votes in the electorate are recorded. Tbe whole of these returns, including those from St. Albans and Selwyn Street school, were' completed by 9.45 p.m., but the Sydenham returns were nbc to hand -.until. 10,30, though not a large number of votes recorded.
